RVSM OpSpecs

The FAA now issues Operations Specifications (though each page says "Letter of Authorization) for most Part 91 operations, including RVSM, MNPS, RNP, B-RNAV, P-RNAV, MMEL Use, MEL Use, etc.

Your approvals, including renewals, all are being put into this format. Generally, this is about 8-12 pages of information and may delay your approval if the requests are not clear.

Here is a sample image of one of the pages of the OpSpecs

The OpSpecs Process

During the RVSM process (or if you obtaining a Part 125 or 135 certification with GLN) we will go over the specific Operations Specifications you want to optimize your flight operations. If you are staying in the Western Hemisphere only then the manuals and OpSpecs are tailored to just the RVSM issues. If you operate outside the Western Hemisphere then we have several manual sets, depending on country of registry and area of operations,  that include MNPS, RNP-5, RNP-10, B-RNAV and P-RNAV, plus of course other items such as the MEL or use of the MMEL as your MEL.

Copies for Your Review and Planning

Either call GLN at 303-925-1491 and ask for the RVSM Work Group or send us an email to rvsm@gln-compliance.com and request a MSWord blank template document of the current Part 91 RVSM Operations Specifications. You might find this helpful in planning for your current RVSM or future requirements.

OpSpecs Problems

There are some problem issues that we think need to be resolved. One of them is the approval of a training provider for RVSM, MNPS, RNP, etc. Currently, 14 CFR Part 91, Appendix G, for Part 91 only requires "knowledge" or experience, but the OpSpecs want someone listed. This has caused some problems already as individual inspectors might be approving different sources, such as online training that others are not.
